California Gold Rush

“Old Shasta” was a bustling commercial center of the mining district during the California Gold Rush from the 1850s to the 1880s. A major shipping point for mule trains and stagecoaches, Shasta was bypassed by the railroad in the 1880s and soon became a ghost town.

Shasta City

Visit this real live ghost town and tour Gold Rush-era buildings, including a restored barn and courthouse. You can also see a post office, church, elementary school, general store and jail.

  • What is the climate and recommended clothing?

Layered clothing is recommended. Summer and spring days are warm and the nights are cool, while fall and winter can be chilly all around. Dress in layers and you’ll be prepared.
  • How big is the historic park?

Shasta Historic Park is about 11 square miles, and the town still has a population of 1,771 living human beings – and some ghosts, so the legends say.
